The Story:

The Three Laws of Robotics:

First Law: A robot may not harm a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

Second Law: A robot must obey the orders given to it by the human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

Third Law: A robot must protect its own existence, as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Manual of Robotics
56th edition, year 2058

Antecedents: Obvious. "A.I.", "Terminator" (specially the third movie, that scored by Beltrami, who also works in "I, Robot"), and something from The Bicentennial Man.

Musical Precedents: Two, very clearly, "Terminator 3, Rise of the Machines" and some pieces from "Hellboy" (that final theme that starts with several resemblances to Father's Funeral). There are also themes with an style that recalls those of Goldsmith and Goldenthal.

First Listening: The containment, orientation and atmosphere of the score are surprising, undoubtly very different from what the movie trailer was announcing, a mere enjoyment of Will Smith's senseless poses. "I, Robot" is not a grandiloquent Beltrami, but contained (a characteristic that impregnates almost all the composer's career, althoung contained is not equivalent to anodyne, at least this not the case).

I, RobotGetting into the Facts: Beltrami has composed a truly round work in a very little time. Sincerely, I found myself surprised because of the results, and I have no doubt that they will raise several points along with the images.
I, RobotThere are action themes that remind us to Goldsmith, like "Gangs of Chicago", and others closer to Goldenthal's typical sonorities (but not so overloaded), like the great theme "Chicago 2025". For the one writing this, the best theme should be between I, Robot Theme (End Credits), with a really surprising tones coming from Beltrami, since maybe the only references could be found in Terminator 3 (approximately), and the one in "Round up", one of the most melodic and evocative themes, but ending with a wide load of grandiloquence (the only one in the whole score), that now, reminds more to Terminator 3.
In this little time, (let us recall that Beltrami replaced Trevor Jones, because of several causes), Beltrami not only has composed a correct score, but also he has contributed with a severity and containment that, undoubtly, will silence his detractor and hook up his fans. It is not better than Hellboy, but I, Robot is a great work from Beltrami.
